Are you planning your first trip to the campground after the long, harsh winter? Then you’ll want to read these RV camping tips. Here at RVs Northwest, we’ve seen it all and want to make sure you have the best time possible on your next trip. Here are some key tips to be sure you’re prepared for your spring RV camping trip.

Watch the Weather

Watching the weather is something that’s important for planning any trip, but especially when the trip is camping. We all know that the weather during these early months can be unpredictable; be sure to stay on top of it by regularly checking a weather app. Something as simple as your phone can make it easy to stay on top of the forecast for the trip you’re planning.

Plan for Rain

Even when the forecast says clear skies there’s always the possibility of rain. This is why packing for rain is always important. You’ll want to bring a tarp to cover your outdoor equipment, plenty of towels, some umbrellas, some rugs for your RV floors to avoid tracking dirt and mud inside, and an outdoor rug for the same reason.

Pack Layers

Temperature can be just as unpredictable and inconsistent as the weather in the springtime, so it is important to pack for just about any weather conditions. The temperature can be 70-80 degrees in the daytime (depending on where you’re camping) and then drop to 40 degrees or lower in the evening. This is why it is important to pack layers in order to assure you stay comfortable, no matter what mother nature throws at you.

Check Tire Pressure Before Leaving

The cold winter just passed and it's likely been a while since you last drove your RV. There’s a good chance your tires are in need of a little air. This is important to avoid a flat tire or the other dangers that come with low tire pressure like a blowout.

Bug Spray

Ahh, springtime: the flowers are blooming, the birds are singing, wildlife is moving … and the mosquitoes are back out and ready to greet campers. In order to avoid this unwanted reunion be sure to pack plenty of bug spray and citronella candles to help repel the mosquitoes. Additionally, throwing some sage into your firepit not only smells great, but also is a good natural way to send the pests packing.

Scout Your Campsite

There are a number of things that are important to know about your campsite before setting your camper or RV up there; if you can, you’ll definitely want to scout it out ahead of time. Especially due to the uncertain weather, you’ll want a campsite that is level, easy to back into and pull out of, and made of concrete or gravel. Some campsites are made of dirt which can get your RV stuck in the mud in the case of rain. If you’re not aware of these conditions or are able to scout out your campsite ahead of time, it's a good idea to call the campground and ask for these details before arriving.

Make a Checklist

We’ve already mentioned many things to be sure to bring with you on your journey to assure you’re as prepared as possible! In order to assure you remember everything to bring, it's always a good idea to make a list and check off what’s already packed. A common mistake is forgetting sunscreen, a necessity for any camping trip. Another thing we suggest bringing is a dehumidifier due to the high humidity of the spring season.

Have Fun!

This is the most important one; the whole point of a camping trip is to have a good time! So get out there, stay safe, and have a fun adventure!
